Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #16
Any place you can find an ally in your battle against the uncontrolled use of technology in your child’s life seems to be a good thing and there is possibly no better ally than the teachers at your child’s school.
In our middle school, parent-teacher conferences require the attendance of the student, unlike elementary school when teachers only meet with the parents. It’s expected that the growing child begin to take personal responsibility and this is an important step. Moreover, there’s an opportunity for all the child’s academic teachers to meet all in one sitting along with the parents – quite a change for a 6th grader! I certainly did not have that experience when I was growing up – well, it was either that or it was so traumatic that my mind forgot the experience (lol) (actually, I never had such an experience until I joined the Navy and had to sit in a qualification board).
It can be a but of a stressor for a child to face a board of adults but there’s nothing quite like a bunch of grown people who are supportive of the messages the parents have been trying to teach the child. All too often, without a community of adults to compare to, the child can get the notion (or at least lead you on to thinking) that only the parents have all these restrictive ideas which can appear like incessant nagging, this is exacerbated by when they go to friends’ houses, they usually will not see the most disciplinary example from other parents.
Other adults in the form of your child’s teachers, however, are another story. There’s nothing a teacher likes better than a student who follows rules and has a good behavior. A student who manages to make good grades and is self-motivated is a great becomes a walking testimony to the teachers’ ability to teach and self-esteem. And if the improper use of technology or any other lack of discipline interferes with school work, then steps must be taken to correct the errant behavior, usually all in the best interest of the parents, and to the child, whether he believes it or not.
There’s an old saying, “It takes a village [to raise children].” That’s another way of saying it helps to have a community of like minded adults to help guide and influence your child’s development. Teachers are your allies and it helps to work close enough with them to help make sure your child stays on track. You are as a parent, nevertheless, the most influential teacher in your child’s life.
