Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #25
I realize my limited experiences don’t amount to making generalizations, however, I just wanted to share some observations of our friends, fine people, who home-school their children – all six of them! As of this writing there children are ages 1 through 13.
As I mention in the video, their children’s exposure to technology, especially hand-held technology and television, is not a part of their environment at home. Instead of playing games on a iPad or some game station, they seem to have a DIY science or household building project which they tackle in ernst.
Both parents are well-educated, strong spiritually, and the father works from his office at home, developing his software business as well as helping his father maintain some properties.
When I am involved in a conversation with their older children (and their parents), they are excellent listeners, attentive, interested, well-spoken and well-mannered. The eldest son is instilled with a strong sense of responsibility and helps look after his younger siblings.
Although each child has their own individual traits, each is a kind person and exhibit a good amount of curiosity. With the exception of the youngest who is still an infant, they help in many ways around the house, whether they are in the vegetable garden and around their property. Moreover, the children are fairly rugged and adventuresome when it comes to playing outdoors, especially now that they live near a wooded area (before they lived in Silicon Valley, now they live in Washington State).
Hanging around with people like our friends definitely help encourage me that there is hope for the future.
I know, there is no perfection when it comes to being a parent or a child and life is not without struggles, but our friends have done a great job.
