Fatherhood in a Technological World – Message #47
I’ve been hoping for an easy article to write, and I think I’ve finally got one!
I wanted to follow up on an article I did several weeks ago on getting my children to get themselves out of bed.
As I mentioned before, when it comes to child rearing, I have a tendency to be over-instructive. What that can result in is a child who has a hard time getting out of bed with the alarm as the parent’s efforts to convince them to get up causes them to be accustomed to the external stimulus. This can result in a child who gets out of bed unacceptably late, much later than the alarm.
I alerted my two children for the last time on a Sunday evening, before a school day, telling them what my plan was (that I would expect the first one up to make sure the other is awake and that I would not get involved), what the school consequences are for being tardy, and what they should expect from themselves (to be responsible for themselves to get out of bed).
Ever since we implemented this change in routine, the children are out of bed without me having to get involved. Rarely have I had to go in their room myself to rouse them out of bed and they follow the alarm better than before.
My kids feel more responsible, act more responsibly, and I have more freedom. Mission Accomplished.

The effect on your children has and will have a great influence on their growth. As a parent, you may be feeling the anxiety of having to confront the challenges of being at the end of the rail of the powerful forces driving technology into the laps and hands of your children.
Your work is cut out for you are a father. Even though popular culture doesn’t do well to herald the value of the leadership role of men in the form of fathers, let me tell you right now, being a father in this time and age has never been more important.
