4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, 6 and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled. 2 Corinthians 10:4-6
How can we shape that into a New Year’s resolution?
This passage written by the Apostle Paul to the church in Corinth contains an important mental shift brought about by the divine transformation of being born-again. When someone becomes a new creation in the Spirit, which is what occurs after a born-again act of God, a believer is filled with new desires and hopes. Much of what was important before will give way to the things of God that become of prime importance.
One of the metrics that Paul points out is this reality that a believer is focused on
“bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.” That’s a tall order, but it is something that occurs when ones discipline is to receive enlightenment from objective reading of the Scripture. In the process of reading and comprehending God’s instructions, we become more apt to share thoughts with God and therefore, Godly inclinations and a growing leaning towards Godly behaviors will result.
You have to have a certain perspective of the reality of God to assign importance to His instructions. You wouldn’t go to work for a new employer and deliberately ignore the responsibilities of your new position. In the same way, as a follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, you ought not ignore His teachings and instructions; on the contrary, you would hunger for the instructions provided by the Savior, the living God. By engaging with God’s words, instructions, and lessons, you are going to improve your chances of doing what God actually wants, and not merely what you want, what you guess what God wants, or what someone tells you, regardless of their station in life.
Believers still regularly struggle and battle with the old self and their old desires, but destructive habits, lusts, and worldly suffering begin to wane and those burdens can just lift off your shoulders with a regular diet of God’s instructions. Disciplined discipleship results in a desire to please God instead of yourself and becomes part of the natural process of “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”
