We’ve all felt that need to horde on occasion, there’s something inside us that desires to stack the deck in our favor when we have the chance.
One of the axioms of warfare is to have an overwhelming force, similarly, the physical laws favor the huge truck colliding with a smaller vehicle. The walls need to be stronger, the bench needs to be deeper, having extra cash to support the deal is always helpful.
All of these common sense precautions would find few people to argue otherwise, but something counter intuitive, at least from a worldly perspective, happens when one is focused on God and His sovereign and good attributes. You begin to be satisfied with less knowing God can provide even when there is little.
It’s a bit like the “feeding of the 5000” (John 6). The disciples found a boy who had a meager supply of fish and bread which Jesus proceeded to bless and it multiplied so much that there was an entire bask full of food for each disciple at the end.
Another Bible example that comes to my mind is Gideon forming an army (Judges 7). The Israelites were to fight against Midian and Gideon recruited over 30,000 soldiers to fight.
And Yahweh said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give Midian into their hands, lest Israel honor themselves, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ 3 So now, come, call out in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is afraid and trembling, let him return and depart from Mount Gilead.’” – Judges 7:2-3.
What’s happening is, God delights in showing how He can deal with problems, like fighting a battle, using scarce resources. In Gideon’s case God reduced the size of the army from 30,000 to 300. You think you need a lot when God can do amazing things with very little if what your desire is in His will or for His glory.
There are some other factors that come into play, here, such as, it’s better to use 300 strong, fearless, battle hardened warriors than to have 10,000 without a heart to fight but the main point is, when you don’t have as much as you’d like, a person maturing in his or her faith begins to be at peace with what used to be not enough.
At the same time, I am not saying that you should drive into the desert with only enough gas to get half way to a gas station.
Areas that are ripe for God’s blessings are areas where we are weak spiritually, areas that we are prone to sinful responses or ineffective ways to cope.
Studying the Bible on a daily basis helps to build relationship with the eternal, powerful, sovereign Creator God. Coming to a real acceptance of the truth of his power, a believer will begin trusting in the reliability and the ultimate good God provides for all who seek His will for their lives.
Over time, faith is God’s trustworthiness gets stronger, from receiving greater insights from the Bible, the influence of the Holy Spirit, to personal experience, the experience of others, and the growing body of evidence that evidence the Gospels are true and Jesus did rise from the grave.
Knowing God is a truth teller and the acceptance His absolute truth becomes the rock upon which faith and truth increase. Peace and a certainty of God’s promises provide hope for the future, even though circumstances are not what you once thought were acceptable.
