25.11 God is Eternal

Like some bizarre Time Machine, I scrolling through my handheld’s calendar passing decades back to the month of my birth, I wanted to check which day I was born. Ever so briefly my mind would draw on a memory consummate with the decade I was passing.

In the process of seeing the monthly calendars flash by year by year, decade by decade, I had a sense of God’s omnipresence and eternal nature.

God exists outside of the time space continuum where one day is like a thousand and a thousand is like one day.

Have you considered or have come to an understanding of who God is or could be?

Does an eternal God exist or is God simply a construct of human thought either individual or collective?

If an eternal God exists, how do we learn about Him? What is true?

Through divinely inspired writings, the Bible holds evidence of the existence of God and He is not silent about who He is. God is quite exacting and has provided extensive historical evidence to reveal His Sovereign power, unchanging divine characteristics, moral Commandments, and a glorious future yet to be fulfilled.

The Bible, supported by an ever growing body of historical and archeological research, contains literature that spans 1600 years and over 40 authors, not to mention a multitude of transformed lives.

Often referred to as The Word of God, it contains the unmistakable supernatural fingerprint of a holy, righteous, just, loving, merciful, eternal, and creator God who has 3 distinct personal facets.

The three aspects are known as The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit. The eternal Godhead has innate interpersonal relationships and becoming a believer and follower of Christ is a personal relationship rather than a religious system created by human philosophy.

In the form of The Son, God entered human history in a common, in a divinely unique way, born as a baby, Jesus of Nazareth. He is God with us, King of kings and Lord of lords. He was Born to be and is Christ the Savior.

Further below is a collection of Bible passages that involve God’s eternal nature.

Godly attribute: Eternal

Everlasting to Everlasting

Lord, You have been our dwelling place from generation to generation.
Before the mountains were born
Or You brought forth the earth and the world,
Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.

You turn man back into dust
And say, “Return, O sons of men.”
– Psalm 90: 1-3

The Gracious gift of God is Eternal Life

22 But now having been freed from sin and enslaved to God, you have your benefit, leading to sanctification, and the end, eternal life. 23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gracious gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. – Romans 6:22-23

Our Eternal Builder

For we know that if the earthly tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For indeed in this we groan, longing to be clothed with our dwelling from heaven, inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked. 2 Corinthians 5:1-3

Our Eternal Life is in His Son

The one who believes in the Son of God has this witness in himself. The one who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed in the witness which God has borne witness about His Son. 11 And the witness is this, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has the life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have that life. – 1 John 5:10-12

He who is True is Eternal

We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one. 20 And we know that the Son of God has come, and has given us understanding so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life. – 1 John 5:19-20

The Alpha and the Omega

Behold, He is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him; and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him. Yes, amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who [b]is to come, the Almighty.” – Revelation 1:7-8

God Predates Time, He is the Creator

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. – Genesis 1:1-5

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. In Him was life, and the life was the Light of men. And the Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overtake it. – John 1:1-4

Our Eternal Priest, the only one we need

…but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to save forever those who draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to make intercession for them.

26 For it was fitting for us to have such a high priest, holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and exalted above the heavens; – Hebrew 7:24-26

Nebuchadnezzar praises the Most High

“But at the end of those days, I, Nebuchadnezzar, lifted up my eyes toward heaven, and my knowledge returned to me, and I blessed the Most High and praised and honored Him who lives forever – Daniel 4:34

Angelic Witnesses

Then the angel, whom I saw standing on the sea and on the earth, lifted up his right hand to heaven, and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that there will be delay no longer, but in the days of the voice of the seventh angel, when he is about to sound, then the mystery of God is finished, as He proclaimed good news to His slaves, the prophets. – Revelation 10:5-7

To God, one day is like a thousand years…

But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years like one day. The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some consider slowness, but is patient toward you, not willing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. – 2 Peter 3:7-9

God’s throne is established and everlasting

Yahweh reigns, He is clothed with majesty;
Yahweh has clothed and girded Himself with strength;
Indeed, the world is established, it will not be shaken.
Your throne is established from of old;
You are from everlasting.
– Psalm 93:1-2

God answers Job

Then Yahweh answered Job out of the whirlwind and said,

“Who is this that darkens counsel
By words without knowledge?
Now gird up your loins like a man,
And I will ask you, and you make Me know!
Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know understanding,
Who set its measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the line on it?
On what were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
When the morning stars sang together
And all the sons of God shouted for joy?
– Job 38:1-7

God the Father and God the Son, an eternal relationship

even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. I glorified You on the earth, having finished the work which You have given Me to do – John 17:2-4

And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when the Son of Man will sit on His glorious throne, you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive one hundred times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30 But many who are first will be last; and the last, first. – Matthew 19:28-30

God warns of eternal consequences

“Then He will also say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me, accursed ones, into the eternal fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels; 42 for I was hungry, and you gave Me nothing to eat; I was thirsty, and you gave Me nothing to drink; 43 I was a stranger, and you did not invite Me in; naked, and you did not clothe Me; sick, and in prison, and you did not visit Me.’ 44 Then they themselves also will answer, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry, or thirsty, or a stranger, or naked, or sick, or in prison, and did not take care of You?’ 45 Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ 46 And these will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” – Matthew 25:41-46

He who believes in His Son has Eternal Life

15 so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

16 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. – John 3:15-16

The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. 36 He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” – John 3:35-36

God is preparing our eternal wages

Even now he who reaps is receiving wages and is gathering fruit for life eternal – John 4:36

Come to the One who has Eternal Life

And you do not have His word abiding in you, for you do not believe Him whom He sent. 39 You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that bear witness about Me; 40 and you are unwilling to come to Me so that you may have life. – John 5:38-40

He has seen the Eternal Father

He gives Eternal Life

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; 28 and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish—ever; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. – John 10:27-29

His commandment is Eternal Life

For I did not speak from Myself, but the Father Himself who sent Me has given Me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. 50 And I know that His commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me.” – John 12:49-50

This is Eternal Life

Jesus spoke these things; and lifting up His eyes to heaven, He said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify Your Son, that the Son may glorify You,even as You gave Him authority over all flesh, that to all whom You have given Him, He may give eternal life. And this is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent. – John 17:1-3
